What's been going on?

So the weekends been and gone. Was a good one as it was fairly relaxed with not very much work on which was quite nice.

First football match of the season on Sat morning and we (Oakwood) won 10-1 against St Barnanbas'. Was an amazing scoreline and although i didn't manage to get a goal i had an ok game. Am feeling amazingly stiff today though.

On Sat evening we had our normal meet up with 3 former college colleagues (Louise, Penny and Clare). These times are always great as we have the chance to catch up, challenge each others thinking (well sometimes as we often agree), drink wine and generally talk youth work and life and listen to music.

Listened to lots of music including athlete, the bees, radiohead and weird al. We also watched part of the 1 Giant Leap DVD and discussed its application as a youth work resource. If you haven't seen this it's well worth a viewing although it would be wise to approach with care for use with certain groups. The basic idea being the DVD was to get the views of different thinkers and musicians relating to various themes. The DVD was made by 2 members of 'Faithless' so includes loads of cool and interesting music from all around the world.

We also talked about a discipleship resource that Louise has found and I'm hoping that she will leave the name of it in the comments below.

Had a brief chat with our new minister Andy Potter on Sunday morning as he and his family moved down into the area on Friday. He doesn't officially start his pastorate until December as he is part way through a sabbatical but it was a real encouragement to see that he is now here in the vicinity. Really excited about working with Andy in the coming months.

Off to another drama rehearsal now!

So, that new discipleship resource - produced by Nooma (?a phonetic spelling of pneuma, as in spirit, as in Holy Spirit - discuss...). Basically, a bunch of DVDs that explore a variety of spiritual themes through ten minute monologues to camera. Sounds a bit odd - actually I thought it was great. However, I suspect it could be one of those things you either love or you hate. Not entirely sure how you'd use it with a youth group - suspect it would be better with a twenties group as a stimulus for discussion. Haven't been braved enough to use the one I have (on discipleship) yet, but when I do I'll use it with my youth team rather than young people.

Point worth noting - these DVD are not cheap. A ten minute film costs £9.50 from Wesley Owen (glup) but it's worth thinking about buying direct from the US site where they're $10, although I guess P+P coud put the price up a bit.

Actually, after further exploration of the Nooma site it appears you can only buy online from them if you're in the US or Canada. Disappointing. Sorry.
